How to mount GoPro Surf Cam

I've had one of these GoPro camera's now for a year and every time I've used it I have had some great shots. Last year I was fortunate enough to go on a heli-skiing trip in Washington and right before my trip I decided to scoop one of these cameras up. Arriving just in time, the GoPro was nothing less than steller on my once in a lifetime trip

The GoPro served well... so well that our surf instructor at the shop convinced me to let him mount my camera on his brand new board...

Ok, well now that we know what this camera can do, here is how to actually mount this camera to a surfboard!

First thing, clean the area on the surfboard where you want to mount the GoPro. Cleaning the area requires base clean or some sort of wax remover. I used Sex Wax Wax Remover (available at your local surf shop) which although is the same thing as base clean it did the job and took no effort. After using the Sex Wax Remover I also cleaned the area with some windex and a rag.

Second, figure out where you want to place the GoPro Surf HERO Expansion mount. I mounted the camera on the nose of the surfboard. The surfboard this camera is mounted to is a Meyerhoffer 9'2 longboard. I recommend mounting the camera a few inches back from the nose but it is really up to you. The GoPro Camera gives a great fisheye view so you don't have to worry about not being in view.

Third, adding the stick to your stick. With the pacman looking, double sided adhesive pad you will want to find the optimal placement. Make a small outline with a Sharpie where to place it before actually sticking it on. Make sure the Red side is up. Stick it and don't worry about messing up. Just don't mess up with sticking the next part! Also, press down extra hard and make sure you get a real good, even stick all over.

Fourth, getting close! Now we're going to stick the hard plastic GoPro Surf mounting plate to the adhesive. There is an arrow on the white plastic piece pointing forward. You might want to make a dot with a Sharpie. Line the GoPro mounting plate up exactly where you want it and make sure you get a good stick. I mean REALLY press down hard!

Fifth, mounting the GoPro Surf Camera's safety leash. This part is not too tricky. Just like the larger piece, stick the adhesive with the Red side up. Make sure to leave a little space because the hard plastic piece going on top seems a bit larger than the adhesive. Press down hard once again.

Stick the hard plastic piece of the safety leash on the adhesive

Bam! Done. Mount up the GoPro camera to the mount and get in the water!

Well.. at least to Burton Snowboards that is. I've watched Burton's new video on their homepage. I couldn't quite figure out what the countdown was but maybe it was because I was laughing my ass off at the actors and their gnarly stash's. As I reminisced on all my old college days when Anchorman came out I think to myself about the good ole days of old school, hot dogging and think how much the ski trends move in a full rotation. Anchorman was my Halloween outfit one year and an old school skier was another.. kind of reminds me out these actors.

These trends come around full rotation so rule number one is never throw away your old gear. Yeah, you may be able to give that old jacket to cousin Johnny but store it away in a closet or attic and pull it out in 20 years and it will be cool again.

Speaking of cool you Gotta check out the new K2 gear for this 2012 winter season. We got some new K2 twin tips that I had a chance to get out on at Okemo, VT on a demo day and I was quite impressed.

The new K2 Recoil takes over for the 2011 K2 Revival ski. The Revival just needed a name change and K2 switched the ski to a more park friendly rocker. My personal ski was the '11 K2 Revival Iron Maiden and I got to ski the '12 Recoil and it felt like I was right back at home.

Helly Hansen Has Arrived

Well the new Helly gear is now officially in for this winter and we have some mixed emotions. We had seen a great line of clothing when our buying team previewed the line. We saw some fresh new things from the Norwegian company. New materials, new logoing, and lots of intuitive designs. From the new trash bag looking Odin series Isolater jacket to the super soft Propile, new things are happening with this brand. This winter is going to be a good one. How do I know? Well besides the fact that we are predicted to get absolutely dumped on by mother nature, we feel that we have some of the freshest new styles to offer our customers. Fresh styles = killer looks. We know that killer looks = skiing. And that skiing = a great time.

We decided to talk a little bit about some fresh new styles from the leader in performance ski wear, Spyder. Gearing up for a great winter

Summer is officially over in Southern Maine! We can simply feel it in the air. The sun is sitting a little lower, the ocean is getting cooler, and the gearheads around the shop are starting to get excited about winter. We've noticed a steady stream of customers coming into the Arlberg simply wanting to touch and feel all the great new clothing and hardgoods we've got in so far.

Just yesterday, a gentleman came in looking for a softshell and couldn't wait to tell us that Sugarloaf was getting snow that night! Although he didn't end up purchasing anything it was obvious he was there to get his mind thinking snow!

Although snow down in the city of Portland might be a few weeks out, our staff can't wait. We've been unpacking our massive shipments of clothing, skis, snowboards, and winter wetsuits which just wets our pallets for this upcoming season. The farmers almanac has predicted that Maine will have one of its snowiest years in history. Time to bust out those powder skis!

Within these boxes of goodies that we have recieved are some absolutely killer styles. We've got in all our Armada Jackets, Obermeyer kids clothing, North Face jackets and pants, Giro helmets, and Smith Helmets and Goggles.

Ok so thats a lot of gear.. what is our favorites? From Armada we love the new Armada Fuze Shell Jacket for men. It's flashy, blingy, fits great, and just really well made. It's going to be for the freestyle skier but can be war by a snowboarder as well.

From Obermeyer we this the Obermeyer Mekayla girls jacket for teens. It's beautiful, super warm, and matches up perfectly with the Obermeyer Amelia ski pant.

What has Park 2 Peak been up to these days?!

Wonder what we've been doing on this incredibly hot summer? In one word, Working. We have been putting in copious amounts of time in the last few weeks unpacking hundreds of boxes filled with winter goodies.

It seams like every year our ski and snowboard manufacturers are shipping gear to the retailers earlier and earlier. Whether it has to do with most of the production being done overseas or the companies wanting to sell new 2011 gear in the summertime, it seems to us overwelming. Overwhelming or just the fact that we would rather be surfing the beach, its anyone's call really. No wrong answers here.

Well so far we have received enough gear to keep our computer guru's busy as hell. We started seeing K2 Snowboarding boots, bindings and board in the end of June! After that it was Ride's Snowboards like the Agenda and LX binding. In early July we got our first few Burton shipments in which contained mostly clothing followed by Burton snowboards and other hardgoods.

The latest to flow through our warehouse doors has been Armada Skis, Line Skis, and K2 Skis. I may be a tad bias but damn they look sick!

Beach Week in Maine

What a sick week we have had! Unbelievable weather all week long with highs up in the 90's anddd Surf was up!

Got a chance to go out on the new Catch Surf Beater Board which was awesome. The new Beater Board is a revoluionary board that differs from anything you've ever ridden before. Image being able to surf, skim, and body board with 1 tool. Beater Board does it. The 54" long board has a foam top and a hard plastic base that is just slippery enough to glide along while skimming.

I found the Beater a challenge to stand up at first. Because I normally ride a long board while surfing, adjusting to the super small shape was tough. The other great part about the Beater is that you can actually use it any day and at any beach. Because the board is foam it is considered a Black Ball surfboard. "Black Ball simply means surf it anywhere, without restrictions."

Not being able to surf during the hours from 9:00 - 5:00 at Higgins Beach, Maine flat out sucks and with this board I think we're going to have a lot more happy surfers.

Surf Season is upon us

Folks its officially Spring time in Maine. ReggaeFest at Sugarloaf has just passed and I know we're all a little hungover still but there is officially no better way, 'according from Paul on the Cape' cure a hangover than going surfing. The exercise you get while surfing is unbeliveable and the thrill cant be matched.

We're just getting in goodies now for summer! Northerners we have 6/5/4mil, 5/4/3mil, 4/3mil wetsuits from O'Neill, Quiksilver, Billabong, and XCEL. Southerners check out our rashguards, boardshorts, and shorty wetsuits.

Bluebird Days

For us skiers and riders, there is nothing better than a bluebird day. For those not involved in skiing or riding, there is no term more annoying than "bluebird day," as I have recently discovered. First off, since there's not really a real solid definition floating around out there, I'll give it my best shot.

A bluebird day is any day spent skiing or riding where there are clear, blue skies and bright, warm sunshine. Some people claim this has to be the day after a snowstorm, but I disagree. I will, however, add that the temperature should be right around, or preferably above, freezing, to truly be considered a bluebird day.

I notice that as I throw the term around in mixed company, I get a lot of puzzled looks by those who are unfamiliar with the term. Those who are familiar with the term, but are not themselves skiers or riders, tell me the expression is stupid. My hilarious friend, Katie, when she noticed I had posted my enjoyment of a bluebird day on a social networking site that shall remain nameless, exclaimed "Today is a pigeon day!" There was definitely a hint of sarcasm detectable in her typing. Another friend, Renee, tells me how much she hates my use of the term, and has encouraged me to stop doing so. "Why don't you just say it was a nice day?!" The irritation in her voice makes me laugh.

Well, quite frankly, it was a nice day, but that just doesn't really express how awesome it was. Which is why I am going to assume that the bluebird day haters are jealous of my ability to enjoy a beautiful day of skiing while they're stuck inside complaining about how much they hate winter. And it's also why I'll continue to say "bluebird day" as much as possible, just because I enjoy the reaction.

Don't forget to get after it out there folks, and take in those BLUEBIRD DAYS! We are running very short on ski days here in sunny Maine!

Missed another day of spring skiing due to poor decision making the night before. We're running out of days, but hopefully I'll manage to have a couple more up at the Loaf and a possible trip to Tuckerman Ravine in two weeks. Think snow and cool temps people.

Hello again, fellow skiers. It’s snowing outside my window as we speak. It seems that Mother Nature would like us to enjoy a few more weeks of skiing. No complaints here. The Loaf is reporting over 6 inches of fresh snow at the top. Plans for tomorrow include a pleasant drive up Rt. 27 to survey the conditions firsthand, and to finally test out those Armadas.

Spring skiing is in full swing, and with temperatures climbing, I have noticed a change among my fellow enthusiasts that is a little bit troubling. What I am referring to, of course, is the lack of helmets on the hill. I know it’s getting warm, and that old helmet is probably feeling a little too warm, but that’s a small price to pay for peace of mind, and, in the event of a crash, an intact skull. And with the helmets put out in recent years, such as Smith’s Variant Brim (which has 22 fully adjustable vents, I’ve counted them!) and Giro’s G10mx (which is also very well-ventilated and extremely lightweight), there is really no excuse for not wearing this essential piece of protection.

As the season has progressed, I’m certain your confidence level has progressed as well, and you’re skiing as well as you have all season. The snow is soft, and you’re hitting lines, drops, and trails that might have scared you off earlier in the year. Those bumps that looked so hard and unforgiving in January are a helluva lot easier to navigate now that they’re soft like buttah. The ice that the East coast is so famous for seems like a distant memory. But, with you skiing harder than ever, really starting to push the envelope, not wearing a helmet now is a mistake. I consider myself to be an expert skier, and I’ve really been getting after it the past couple of weeks. I’ve also had three crashes this season that would more than likely have resulted in concussions, if not, at the very least, a splitting headache, had I not been wearing a helmet. Two of those crashes have been in the warm temperatures we’ve experienced in the last two weeks, when I’ve seen so many tossing their helmets aside for a ball cap and a pair of shades.

If you have an old, heavy, clunky helmet with little or no ventilation that really gets the steam rolling off your head, now is the perfect time to upgrade to a new, light, more stylish choice that really lets in the cool breeze while you’re bombing down the hill. That old helmet is not doing you any good if you’re leaving it back in the lodge with your backpack anyways.

I know I’m sounding a bit preachy here. The reality is that the choice is entirely yours. But I do know that I will not hang my helmet up this season until my skis are parked right next to it, no matter how high the mercury climbs.

And I wonder, still I wonder, who will stop the rain? We are currently getting poured on in the great state of Maine. Stayed off the hill today, but the Loaf was reporting as of this morning that they were receiving a wintry mix which was mostly snow. Heading back up either tomorrow or Thursday to assess conditions and give the Armadas I have on loan a try. Really missing my Volkl Unlimited AC30's, which I bent in a pretty big crash the other day at Sugarloaf. Pray for cold overnight temperatures folks, and hopefully we'll be skiing until sometime in May.
Speaking of Spring Skiing...If you don't have a softshell jacket in your bag of tricks, I highly recommend acquiring one. The North Face Apex Bionic is an excellent choice, as is the Striper Hoodie if you're looking for something a little more flashy. Once you wear one of these guys on a warmer day on the hill, you'll wonder how you ever got along without one in your arsenal.

New RV for Park 2 Peak

Today was a great day. Just purchased the new Park 2 Peak RV in New Hampshire and I must say I'm overly excited. With the help of the boys at the shop this thing if going to turn out sick.

The plan is to take the RV on tour around New England to hit up the best ski mountains and demo our new skis. We're trying to put the latest and greatest product in the your hands this winter and we all think the RV will provide the perfect means to help you choose your next new ski.

We know the toughest part about purchasing a new set of skis or bindings is knowing that you're going to love the product you just dropped a lot of money towards. We want our customers to feel confident in their new purchase so what better way than to let you try the skis before you buy.

Froze my butt off

Ok, so I headed up to Sunday River, Maine today and I may say it's the coldest i've been in a long time. Snow was great but it was just so damn cold out it almost didn't make it worth it. The fact that they got almost a foot a week ago and no temps over freezing has helped lay an awesome packed powder base.

Hit up the park mostly and I was astounded how few people were actually out on the mountain. Granted it was a week day and chilly but there couldn't have been more than 500 people on the entire mountain. Gotta wonder how these companies make money?

Hey all. Thanks for stopping by. This is my first post! My end all goal of this blog is to help skiers and snow riders learn more about the sports I love. I have a ton of knowledge in the ski industry from retailing to lessons to just about anything.

I will be talking about current snow conditions in Maine and New Hampshire, new gear, and the ski industry as a whole.
